If I were

If I were: John Tembo

Former president of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), I would not wait for the convention to bar me from contesting as the party’s presidential candidate for a third consecutive term.

Being a seasoned politician, I should have been in the forefront to respect the party’s constitution which states very clearly that one cannot contest as the party’s presidential candidate more than twice.

Yes, I might have scored a point by accepting the wishes of the party members, but it would be wise not to toy around with the idea of tasting the waters in the first place.

If only I were uncle JZU [or is it Puludzu?], I would take heed of the advice from different quarters not to proceed with my intention to manipulate the constitution because the result, as we have all seen, was total rejection which, somehow, had an effect on my reputation as a respected seasoned politician.

How I wish I were the big shot that is John Zenus Ungapake Tembo, because I would realise that the writing was on the wall even prior to the convention that the majority of my party members wanted change. They wanted a younger generation in the likes of Reverend Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and Lovemore Munlo, SC; to breathe a new lease of life into the party.

That is if I were my man John Tembo. Fortunately, I am not him!

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president, I would not declare my interest to vie for the party’s presidency when the constitution bars me from contesting for the third time.

If only I were JZU, I would for once conduct some soul-searching and accept that I have reached the twilight of my political career.

Having failed to steer my party to victory for two consecutive elections, I would avoid a third defeat by taking a final bow to pave the way for new blood.

How I wish I were Baba Tembo, because I would appreciate that the move by over 10 members expressing interest to vie for the presidency, is in itself confirmation that my time is up.

If only I were my man JZU, I would realise that the picture I am portraying is that I am not a true democrat as I claim because had I been one, I certainly would not  have toyed around with the idea of manipulating my party’s constitution in order to achieve my personal desire.

I would appreciate, if I were Tembo that this is the time for the likes of Lazarus Chakwera, Lovemore Munlo, Chris Daza, Felix Jumbe, Jodder Kanjere, Joseph Njobvuyalema, Edwin Banda, Eston Kakhome and Watson Makala Ngozo.

I would realise if I were Tembo, that there always comes a time and as for me, it is now, oh yes Baba Tembo!

That is if only I were Baba Tembo, fortunately I am not JZU.
